Her real name was Charlotte Ball.

  • From my archives.

  • From my archives, with newspaper ad.
  • One ad says she's:
  • The Answer to All Your Dreams

  • Her promo-photo collage, from my archives.
  • Pic line at bottom spells her name ECSTASY
  • but in the pic/collage, it says:
  • They Call Her ECSTACY

  • One of her promo /press/ newsclippings / collage posters. From my archives.

Ecstasy performed in the 1960s. Read more press quotes about her on Glamour Girls of the Silver Screen site's Ecstasy page (see more pix, too).

  • Example:
  • 1963 -- columnist Earl Wilson reports that "a blonde stripper in Ann Corio's This was Burlesque calls herself merely 'Ecstasy'..."
  • 1964 -- starred in Minsky's Follies at the Westchester Dinner Theater, New York

I could not find any more bio/history online references to any vintage Burlesque stripper named Ecstasy, so if you have any info, memories, or stories to share, please email me. Thanks!

A Burlesque Fan Reminisces

Recently I received a nice note from an old-timer who enjoyed seeing many of the well-known Burlesque Babes on the circuit "back in the day". He also kindly sent along these 2 pix of the lovely Angelique.

Here's some tid-bits from our anonymous benefactor's memories--

  • "Remembering many years when I saw many bawdy/beautiful burlesque stars dancing on the stage in Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, and other few cities"
  • "In January of 1959, I first saw a stripper named Justa Dream at Toronto's Casino Theater"
  • "Later in a few months (May 1959 ?), I drove to Detroit's Gayety Theatre ... Virginia "the 3B girl" Bell appeared... With twirling tassels on her Twin Bust... HOT. I was sad when the... Gayety Theatre was closed in the spring of 1960. "
  • "Around 1964...I found the best burlesque theatre "Town Hall" ... I was happy to see my favorite stripper, Irma the Body, again on the stage. "
  • "Sometimes I attended the burlesks in the 1970s. Angelique was my recent favorite stripper. She mostly appeared in a small theatre on Six Mile Rd & Woodward Ave in Detroit. -- Angelique once kissed me in 1974 "
  • "Remembering other lovely dancers... Darlene "Tall, Torrid, Texan" Day, White Fury, Jean "Beautiful Blonde" Carroll, Cindy Parker, Libby Jones, and others. "

My thanks to "Anonymous" for this stroll down memory lane!

  • From my archives, with newspaper ad.
  • There are lots of online references to Dixie Evans, including interviews and videos. Here are but a few of my picks:
  • Jo Weldon's interview with Dixie -- on Alarm Press.com
  • "Oh, my name is Mary Lee Evans. My grandmother’s name was Dixie. I always thought Mary was too bland and so I changed it in third or fourth grade. I was born in Long Beach, California and raised in Hollywood..."

According to an article in the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, Dixie's painted plaster bust was one of the sculptural busts of stars of the bump and grind that were on display in “Breast Defense: Glamour Girls for Early Detection” at the Fallout Gallery on Commerce Street, Las Vegas, for 2008's Exotic World weekend.

Men in Burlesque: THE COMICS

There was one folder in Rose La Rose's theatre photo archives entitled simply COMICS.

The pix weren't even all named, and there wasn't any extra ads or info. Apparently most of the comics didn't even bother with professional photos with their stage names printed on, at least the ones playing Toledo in the 1960s.

That could be because they just didn't feel good about doing Burlesque... maybe they didn't even have enough money. Here's a Joey Bishop quote I found in this great book:

"Every burlesque comic felt like burlesque was the end of the road for him. If he flopped he had no where else to go... "

Finding info on Burlesque comics is even more difficult than researching the girls. There's a little here and there online, but hopefully more will be added. With google scanning millions of books and magazine's, every day there's more info available on zillions of subjects.

I hope they'll scan all the wonderful old CAVALCADE OF BURLESQUE magazines. They are 95% pix of girls, but the rest features comics -- the Top Bananas of the day. You can even read the scripts of some funny comic bits -- "Gags" as they called them.

You should be able to click the pix to see larger views.

Above is the cover of the 1st issue, Fall 1951. So that means these guys and gals were working in the 1940s. Below are a few comics. My pix are difficult to read. Someday I'll do quality scans of all my Cavalcades, but for now:

  • Billy 'Scratch' Wallace / Mike Sachs

  • No names...

  • Click the pic above -- you might be able to make out the names.

Starting below are the pix that were in my archives, so most of these guys were performing circa 1950s & 1960s :

  • Mickey Jay with Rosemary

  • Billy Reed with Jean Carroll

  • Oaky Miller

  • Ken Duric

  • Big Ferguson (spelling?)

  • Willie Dew

  • Silky Silvers

  • Bert Gehan

  • Erby Wilson

  • Pat Burns

  • Dick Martin

  • Lee Clifford

  • Jimmy Calvo

  • Phil Lane

  • Billy "Cheese'n'Crackers" Hagan (this pic is from the 1951 Cavalcade of Burlesque mag.)

  • Jack Hayes (another pic from the 1951 Cavalcade of Burlesque mag.)

The guys below were in my comics folder, but without names:

I know there were many more comics, and I have just shown the pix that I had from Rose's stash. I have other issues of Cavalcade of Burlesque, and will dig them out someday to share.

The VEGAS RETRO site has a few comics pix in their Top Bananas"Best of Burlesque Comics" section.

If anyone has info on a great Burlesque Comics history resource, please let me know-- thanks!
